Indeed, historical documents such as South Carolina's declaration of secession explicitly mentioned the "increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery" as a reason for their departure. Mississippi's secession document was even more direct, stating "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery--the greatest material interest of the world." Therefore, while some may argue the Confederate flag symbolizes Southern heritage, it's undeniable that this heritage is deeply intertwined with the institution of slavery.
